In this white paper, "AeroMACS: A common platform for air traffic management applications," sponsored by the WiMAX Forum, I looked at wireless applications that support the ground segment of air traffic management. AeroMACS is the technology that can bring broadband connectivity in airports to connect fixed and mobile assets, staff, and aircraft, to airlines, airport authorities and traffic control agencies.

Hitachi’s focus is squarely on virtualization of the control plane with its recently announced, fully virtualized MME/SGSN that supports the NFVI. It is an evolution of the existing ATCA-based MME/SGSN that was introduced after Hitachi acquired Nortel’s EPC assets.

Nobody questions Wi-Fi’s role in the current growth of wireless traffic and mobile device adoption. Today, overall Wi-Fi traffic dwarfs cellular traffic and, according to WIK, 74% of the traffic from smartphones and tablet was transported over Wi-Fi in 2013. LTE networks will greatly expand cellular capacity, but Wi-Fi will retain its advantage.
